Since 2020, Natura Mater has supported construction professionals (architects, engineers, engineering consultancies and building material manufacturers) in making design choices that sustainably reduce the carbon footprint of construction projects, drawing on the transition ambitions set by the European Commission.
Natura Mater is a Brussels-based advisory practice specialising in researching and specifying the most sustainable options for construction. It brings together architects, engineers and sustainability specialists, who support project teams in their choice of materials and identify the items where the environmental gains are real.
Since its early days, the consultancy has been meeting the producers, reuse supply chains and manufacturers that are changing the sector, and comparing these options against the practical realities on site. We act as a research lab for sustainable materials, and our commitment rests on a determination to help the construction sector transform and align with the targets set by the European Commission. Our expertise is built on three pillars: identifying the options, analysing their performance and documenting their installation.
We explore low-carbon options and go out to meet the producers who offer them, to understand their materials, their origin and their supply chain. We follow how their range evolves and select the options that meet the strict technical and environmental requirements we have set ourselves.
We study the technical properties of each option, assess its environmental impact and examine the conditions for its installation. Reading these together lets us identify the options that offer the most significant gains without compromising the project's performance or budget.
We support the options we specify through to installation on site, and document what actually happens there. Our research feeds the projects, and the projects in turn feed our research: a virtuous circle in which experience on site moves innovation forward.

The Materatek brings construction professionals together in a space where access to knowledge meets the direct observation of materials. Biobased, geobased, reclaimed and low-carbon samples can be consulted there alongside their technical data. It is where we run our training courses and hold the workshops for our project studies.
